Work ExperienceUniversity of Alaska Fairbanks, Professor, Computer Applications (2004 to Present) I am a Professor with tenure in the Information Technology Program. I teach Providing Computer Support, Photoshop CS, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access. I have given the coordinator position of the ITS program to my colleague in preparation for my Sabbatical in the 2005-2006 academic year. University of Alaska Fairbanks, Professor, Computer Applications (2003 to 2004) Promoted to Professor with tenure May 2003. I am the Tanana Valley Campus coordinator for the Information Technology Specialist Program. I am also the CRA coordinator for the Business Systems and Technology division. University of Alaska Fairbanks, Assistant Professor, Computer Applications (1991 to 1997) I am responsible for both teaching and coordinating the computer applications program for the Tanana Valley Campus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I teach Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Internet, and introductory computer classes. In addition to teaching I coordinate the CIOS program, advise students and chair the Technology Planning Committee of Tanana Valley Campus. Alaska Pacific University, Coordinator, Academic Support Center (1987 to 1991) I was responsible for operating the PLATO computer based education system, teaching computer related classes, including the Introduction to the Macintosh, Introduction to Microcomputers for Science and Engineering and Introduction to Microcomputers in Business, the ordering and distribution of University media, providing computer support and training to the APU computer users, supervising of student employees, general supervision and coordination of the Academic Support Center, and being an academic adviser for provisionally admitted students to Alaska Pacific University. In addition I helped create the Academic Computing Plan for Alaska Pacific University, chaired the Academic Computing Task Force, set–up the Higher Education Purchase Plan with Apple Computer, and helped design a multi–media language learning center. I received an award from the Associated Student Body of Alaska Pacific University for providing service to the students. Alaska Pacific University, Graduate Assistant (1986–1987) In addition to being a full time student, I provided tutoring for adult students, provided assistance to the Center for Access to Lifelong Learning, helped in the teaching of a class on Objectivity, and developed and implemented a proposal for a computer lab for the Learning Resources Center. AIME Inc., Discipline Engineer (1986) I ordered and set–up a network of Macintosh computers and improved the performance of the database and spreadsheets being used to track the completion of test packages for the Lisburne oil field processing plant. Indian Education Community Counselor (1973–1986) I worked twelve years at West High School as an Indian Education Community Counselor. My range of activities included personal and family counseling, academic and career counseling, sponsoring the Alaska Native Culture Club, coaching Native Youth Olympics, organizing a basketball league, working with human relations workshops, developing an alcohol and drug intervention program, and advocating for the needs of the students. Cook Inlet Native Association Summer Youth Program Director (1974–1975) I worked two summers for CINA managing their JOM summer youth program. We arranged many trips, ran a recreation center, and operated a summer camp program. Alaska Children Services Director of Program Development (1972 –1973) I worked for one year as the Director of Program Development for Alaska Children Service. I was responsible for managing a series of grants for youth organizations. These programs ranged from the Cooperative Extension Service Willow Park Youth Program to the Fairview Research Project. I also worked with the other ACS programs in staff training and supervision. Alaska Children Services "All of Us" Program Coordinator (1970–1972) I wrote a grant proposal and created and operated a group home for students who were having difficulty with alcohol, suicide, and living in the city. The program primarily served students who came to Anchorage through the State of Alaska boarding home program. State of Alaska Project Hire Counselor (1969–1970) I worked in Fairbanks for one year as the Project Hire Counselor. My responsibility was to provide support to Alaska Native people who were training for permanent career positions with the Department of Defense. Alaska Methodist University, Upward Bound teacher and recruiter (1969) I was a recruiter and teacher for the Upward Bound program at AMU. This was an important job in that I found I loved working with teenagers. My job with the school district and the idea to start the "All of Us" program came from this summer job. Anchorage Community Action Agency Director of the Emergency Food and Medical Program (1969) As a VISTA planner we investigated and held hearings on the Food Stamp program. We received a grant to start Food Stamp offices in community centers in Anchorage. I started the program and implemented it. We hired and trained people from the community to take the Food Stamp applications and to sell the Food Stamps. VISTA Planner Anchorage Community Action Agency. (1968–1969) I was trained to help community members develop program plans that would meet the needs of their communities. I worked with neighborhood councils to develop programs for the Anchorage Community Action Program. VISTA Volunteer, Shaktoolik Alaska (1967–1968) I was a VISTA volunteer in Shaktoolik Alaska. I did basic community organization and helped operate a pre–school. Special Projects (Pre-UAF)I helped organize the Anchorage Open Door Clinic and Alaska Youth Advocates. I also served on the board of both these organizations. I also have done professional photo assignments for the North Slope Borough, the Ahtna corporation and many politicians. I was a photographer for the first Inuit Circumpolar Conference. Special Programs and Workshops (Pre-UAF)As part of my work I have attended many workshops and conferences. Some of the subjects of these workshops include alcoholism and drug counseling, suicide prevention, community organization, cross–cultural education, and program management. I have also attended training programs on HyperCard and Interactive Multimedia. Recently I have attended workshops on the use of the Internet and World Wide Web to teach courses. Independent Study Classes1994 ED 275 Computers for Teachers course for a student who needed the course to graduate. Independent study course for a student who was getting a BA of Technology degree on teaching computer skills for adults. Independent study course for a student taking a course in creating training materials for teaching computers for adults. Curriculum Innovations1991 Created Excel, Word, and Windows classes 1992 Re-wrote and revised entire CAPS curriculum to simplify the courses, to remove the need for special topics classes, and to better meet the needs of changing computer applications Wrote a modular Computer Business Application curriculum for the Interior Campus that could be delivered by distance delivery. 1993 Designed and implemented the Computer Applications specialty of the ABUS degree 1994 Created a new class, Microcomputer Databases: Filemaker Pro, in response to community requests 1995 Implemented the integration of the CAPS and OMT program into the CIOS program Created and taught an Advanced Excel class in response to community requests. 1996 Integrated direct Internet access and Windows 95 into our courses and curriculum. Taught combined Microcomputer Business Applications and English 111 class with Pete Pinney. The purpose was to use microcomputers to improve the teaching of English Taught an independent study class for Microsoft Excel using my own text book, my Internet Home page, e-mail and attachments. The purpose was to begin using Internet tools to deliver classes Created a Home Page with Internet resources to enhance the courses that I teach. There are resources for Internet Authoring, Searching, Graphics, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Distance Delivery. The Home Page is a tool to improve my classes. Created three new classes for the CIOS program CIOS 146 Using the Internet CIOS 246 Advanced Internet CIOS 211 Providing Computer Support 1997 Coordinated and presented at the CRA Teaching With The Internet Conference. Paricipated in the planning and implementation of the Computer Support degree and certificate. I helped implement the CIOS 100 class that is now being offered, on a continuing basis, through the Department of Corrections. Presentations and Workshops (Also Public Service)1991 One week Using HyperCard Workshop for TVC faculty. 1992 Immaculate Conception School Jr High: Taught a week long computer course for the ICS Jr High Students 1993 Taught a Microcomputer Applications for Seniors class sponsored by the Private Industry Council ASTE 1993: Workshop on “Thinking with a Computer.” Cooperative Extension Service : Taught two sections of Microsoft Excel to the CES employees as part of a state wide conference. Taught a Microsoft Word Class in Ft Yukon Trish Hart interned in my Computer Business Application Class. 1994 ASTE 1994: Workshop on Excel for Beginners St. James: Taught a week long computer course for Jr High students who were part of the St James AME summer program. Taught a Word and an Excel class in Galena Taught an Excel class for the Adult Learning Program of Alaska staff. The courses were for people making the transition from Windows 3.1 or the Macintosh to Windows 95. I am a member of the planning committee for the Computer Support Degree. I attended and testified in support of the degree during its UAF approval process. I am a member of the Rural College Distance Delivery Coordinating Committee. I am a member of the Alyeska Scholarship committee. I am a member of the TVC Equity Committee. I participated in a meeting at the Hutchinson Career center to try to coordinate resources with a college in Russia. I volunteered to staff the TVC booth during Golden Days. I volunteered to staff the TVC booth during the Tanana Valley Fair. I participated in technology planning meetings with the Yukon-Koyukuk Center. The courses were for people making the transition from Windows 3.1, or the Macintosh, to Windows 95. I helped implement the CIOS 100 class that is now being offered, on a continuing basis, through the Department of Corrections. I setup and organized the computer lab for Mary Robinson’s First Church Tutoring program. I judged the computer projects for the Fairbanks School District Science Fair. I attended and participated in a meeting to discuss the problem of public drinking in the downtown area. I provided computer support to Festival Fairbanks. Funded Grant Applications1992 Using Timbuktu as a Means of Distance Education. I wrote a grant to use the Timbuktu remote access program to explore the teaching of computer classes by distance delivery. 1994 MAPCO Grant: A grant to provide video converters, monitors for our computer labs to improve the teaching of computer processes. 1995 MAPCO Grant: A grant to provide a Video projector for our computer labs in order to improve the teaching of computer skills. 2000 I applied for, and was awarded, a CRA Proposal to Advance Distance Education (PADE) grant. The purpose of the grant was to investigate “Using Web Based Tools to Individualize Web Delivered Instruction” 2001 Faculty Initiative “Integrating Industry Standard Certification into the MSSP Degree” Finalist, pending funding. 2002 Faculty Initiative Implemented. We have the equipment, the new faculty member, the courses, and the students.
